Door canopy information
A door canopy, also called a porch canopy, overdoor canopy, awning or portico, is a small roof structure fitted above your front or back door to shelter the entrance from rain, snow and sun. Beyond the practical weather protection, a well-chosen canopy lifts kerb appeal and gives almost any home a more finished, welcoming entrance.
At Apex Canopies we design and manufacture our full range in our Malvern, Worcestershire workshop. The range spans four core styles, each suited to different house types:
Apex door canopies — the classic pitched-roof look. Versatile across period and modern properties, with truss options including Curved T, Straight T, W and Portcullis, plus a no-truss option for a cleaner finish.
Mono door canopies — a lean-to single-pitch design, ideal for contemporary homes and properties where a full apex roof won't fit.
Flat door canopies — contemporary and decorative flat-top designs that work on modern and traditional homes alike. Cost-efficient and quick to install.
Low Pitch Apex — for homes where vertical space above the door is limited.
All Apex canopies are made from a blend of high-performance, impact-resistant polymers that are engineered to look like finely finished timber but without the maintenance, rot or weathering. Roof and frame colours include white, anthracite grey and black; roofs come in grey, brown or terracotta. Standard widths run from 1040mm to 1924mm in 177mm increments. Unsure what size you need? Read our door canopy sizing guide.
Every canopy ships as a flat-pack DIY kit with brick fixings, drill bits, brackets, finials and a step-by-step installation guide. Standard sizes are independently load-tested to withstand a uniformly distributed load of over 750kg. Free UK delivery is included on every order. Standard lead time is 4-6 weeks from order to dispatch.

Door canopy FAQs
What size door canopy do I need?
As a rule of thumb, your canopy should be wider than your door opening by at least 100mm on each side, with a projection of 600-900mm to give meaningful weather protection. Standard Apex canopy widths run from 1040mm to 1924mm in 177mm increments. Measure the width of your door opening, add 200-400mm for proportion and shelter, then pick the nearest standard size. Our full canopy sizing guide walks through it in more detail.
How difficult is it to install a door canopy?
Apex canopies are designed for DIY installation by anyone with reasonable practical skills. Each kit includes the canopy, pre-fitted roof, seal, brick fixing kit with drill bit and screwdriver bits, brackets, trusses, finials and a step-by-step installation guide. Most homeowners can fit a canopy in 1-2 hours. Working at height requires a stable ladder and ideally a second person, so review our installation safety guide before you start. We also publish step-by-step installation videos for each canopy style.
How long is the lead time on an Apex canopy?
Standard Apex, Mono and Contemporary Flat canopies are made to order and dispatched within 4-6 weeks (20-30 working days). Our Decorative Flat range has a longer lead time of 6-8 weeks. Free UK delivery is included on every order. Trade customers with regular requirements can arrange scheduled deliveries to match build programmes, contact our trade team for details.
What are Apex door canopies made from and how long will they last?
Our canopies are manufactured from a blend of high-performance, impact-resistant polymers; a material trusted in architectural applications for decades. They look like finely finished timber but don't rot, warp, split or need repainting. The colour finish is UV-stable to prevent fading. Standard sizes are independently load-tested to withstand a uniformly distributed load of over 750kg, far more than UK snow-loading requirements demand. With no maintenance required, an Apex canopy is designed to last decades.
Can I fit a door canopy to render, timber-clad or non-brick walls?
Yes. Our standard fixing kits are supplied with brick fixings, but the canopies can be fitted to render, timber, blockwork and most modern external wall finishes provided the substrate behind is sound enough to take the load. For non-brick installations we recommend checking the wall construction before drilling. If you're unsure, get in touch via our contact page and we'll advise on the appropriate fixings.
